When we started Kebun Kumara in 2016, we thought we knew what we were doing. We had read the books, watched the videos, and were full of enthusiasm. We were wrong  and that was the best thing that could have happened to us.
The First Seeds
We planted tomatoes, chilies, and kangkung in a small plot in South Jakarta. Most of the tomatoes died within two weeks. The kangkung survived, but barely. The chilies struggled with pests we had never encountered before.
What We Learned
Failure taught us that plants are not passive  they communicate. Yellowing leaves mean overwatering. Stunted growth often signals poor soil nutrition. Pest infestations are usually a symptom of plant stress, not just bad luck.
The Gift of Failure
That first failed harvest taught us more about patience, observation, and humility than any textbook could. It gave us the understanding that real knowledge comes from the soil, not from screens. And it gave us the stories that became the foundation of everything we teach today.
